STEM movement is not centralized or controlled by any one school or organization. Rather, it continues to evolve in new and interesting ways, driven largely by the skills acquired in our 21st century economy.
As the demand grows for technical workers who can solve new and challenging problems, so too the demands on formal and informal educators rise to prepare students in STEM.
The term “STEM” is used a lot, but depending on who is speaking, it can mean many different things. Some people say “STEM” when they really mean just science or math. Others may talk about STEM when all they are really focused on is coding. And many people would consider any engineering design challenge to be, by definition, a STEM project.
Coding, robotics, science fairs, and advanced calculus – those are all great things, but they aren’t (in and of themselves) really STEM. The key factor that distinguishes STEM from its constituent parts is that STEM is the integration across subject areas.
STEM educator is to facilitate students’ talent development and conceptual change for a better STEM Mindset and Character. In our experiences as a driver in STEM/STEAM education, we see STEM/STEAM learning is able to address every opportunity with a solution, or a new design.
STEM infused occupations are growing with the era as more manual occupations become automated. That said, business will seek out leaders, project managers and creative thinkers now more than ever. And in this environment, future employment spots will prove to be more challenging and competitive. By having STEM, it will increase an individual’s creativity, team collaboration, entrepreneurship, critical thinking skills, cognitive skills, and most important of all, the acceptance of failure. These are all needed to stay competitive in the modern technologically imbued environment that the future generations are now exposed to. It is said “only when one goes through the rough that they will be tough”. STEM underlying importance as education/training prerequisite driving force propelling industrial revolution. Thus, anyone that acquires a top-notch STEM education will be prepared to be a global future leader.
Industry revolution not limited to 4.0 relates to metaverse, technology application, data science, automation, innovation, and human capital in the current world. These requirements must be accomplished if Malaysia is to grow toward becoming a developed country. This is the main drive that pressures the need for STEM. With that comes the demand for STEM students. However, as Malaysia strive to improve STEM education to better prepare students for Industry 4.0, students’ interest in the subject begins to wane throughout their schooling, especially in early childhood education, leading them to avoid STEM-related fields while pursuing postsecondary education. This is why having performing and dedication STEM instructors too become a necessity to implement the fun into STEM to allow students to fully immerse themselves into the subjects and find both value while enjoying their time spent studying. Therefore, our programme is made infused with the years of experience that we have obtained to guide future STEM educators in the ways and ideas for making STEM enjoyable for everyone. In addition, we also offer programmes for students themselves to address our concerns regarding the demand for the STEM mindset. Why STEM? It is the leading factor of the upcoming industrial revolution, the world of mankind will be evolving once more.
STEM education is a mental shift from understanding teaching as the transmission of a particular knowledge base to seeing teaching as the act of equipping students with the tools and problem solving skills to handle whatever they may encounter.
This forces a change in the mindset of educators as well as students. Students can only learn to think, design, and solve problems when we give them opportunities to practice. But that means students will struggle, they will pursue dead ends, and they will get wrong answers. As teachers, we often view these outcomes as failures, but with our own STEM mindset, we can see them for what they really are – opportunities for our students to grow.
